Why HGV Driver Health Matters On and Off the Road

Every year, Driver Health Week brings the transport industry together to focus on one simple message: the health of HGV drivers matters, not just for the individual, but for road safety and the whole logistics sector.

Every year, Driver Health Week brings the transport industry together to focus on one simple message: the health of HGV drivers matters, not just for the individual, but for road safety and the whole logistics sector.

This year's campaign runs from the 1st to 6th September, with pop-up health stands, free medical checks, webinars and practical resources being rolled out at truck stops and transport operators across the UK. It's a UK-wide initiative, and one we're glad to see get bigger every year.

Why it matters for HGV drivers

Life on the road comes with real health challenges, long hours behind the wheel, irregular sleep, limited access to healthy food, and the physical strain of the job all add up. Driver Health Week exists to put these challenges front and centre, and to make sure HGV drivers have access to the support and information they need to stay fit, healthy and safe to drive.

For anyone considering a career as an HGV driver, it's also a good reminder that this industry is increasingly focused on looking after the people who keep it moving. Employers, agencies and operators taking well-being seriously is good news for driver retention, safety, and quality of life on the job.

Small changes make a difference

You don't need to wait for Driver Health Week to start looking after yourself on the road. A few simple habits go a long way:

  1. Plan your stops in advance. Knowing where you'll take your breaks, rather than deciding on the fly, makes it much easier to actually take a proper rest.
  2. Use your breaks properly. Get out of the cab, stretch your legs, and give yourself a real reset rather than staying parked up on your phone.
  3. Don't ignore the warning signs. Constant tiredness, stress, or just not feeling like yourself are worth listening to, not pushing through.

We've covered practical day-to-day steps for managing diet, hydration, exercise and sleep in more depth in our HGV driver health and wellness guide, worth a read if you want the specifics.

Get involved

Driver Health Week is free to take part in, whether you're a driver, an employer, or somewhere in between. You can find events, free health checks and driver resources at driverhealthweek.co.uk.

At Driver Require, we work with HGV drivers across the UK every day, and initiatives like this matter to us. Looking after your health is part of building a long, sustainable career behind the wheel and it's something we're always happy to see the industry take seriously.
