What Drivers and Transport Companies Really Think About Driver Recruitment Agencies

Think you know how driver recruitment agencies work? Our latest survey reveals what drivers and transport businesses really want from a recruitment partner.

What Drivers and Transport Companies Really Think About Driver Recruitment Agencies

Driver recruitment agencies have been around for a long time, which makes it surprising that there are still so many myths about how they work.

Take some transport companies, for example. They worry they'll lose control of the hiring process if they work with an agency. Others see agencies as nothing more than a last-minute solution when they're short on drivers. Then there are those who assume it's simply easier to do all the recruiting themselves.

Drivers have their own perceptions, too. Some worry agency work means unreliable hours, last-minute shift changes, or feeling like just another name on a list.

To clear up some of this confusion, we spent some time earlier this year chatting with transport businesses and drivers to find out what it's really like working with driver agencies these days. What they told us was eye-opening.

It gave us a great look into how the industry has changed, which old stereotypes are still hanging around, and where agencies are making life easier for companies.

Here is what we found out – and why a lot of businesses are completely rethinking what a recruitment agency can do for them.

What drivers care about in 2026

We asked drivers what matters most to them at work, and one message came through loud and clear: they want to be treated like the skilled professionals they are.

Of course, pay still matters. But it wasn't the only thing drivers were talking about. Flexibility, reliable work, career development, and feeling valued all ranked highly too.

Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the survey:

  • 58% ranked flexible working as one of the most valuable benefits an employer can offer.

  • 56% said paid training and development opportunities are important to them.

  • Pay was the biggest reason drivers would consider changing jobs, but poor management, inflexible working, and feeling undervalued weren't far behind.

  • Short-notice shift cancellations were the biggest frustration for drivers working through agencies.

  • 40% said they feel optimistic about the future of the transport industry, although more than half of respondents still felt uncertain or concerned about where the industry is heading.

  • 63% said they aren't satisfied with current working conditions.

  • 69% of respondents were already working in either full-time or agency roles, with many bringing more than 16 years of industry experience.

Overall, drivers are looking for stability, flexibility, and a bit of respect for their experience. If you’re a transport business, focusing on promoting these areas is what separates companies that are constantly struggling to recruit from those that build a loyal team for the long haul.

What transport companies need from drivers

Our client survey showed that for transport businesses, the main struggle is finding people with the right attitude, experience, and reliability to keep operations running smoothly.

In other words, they’re searching the driver pool for those who show up, do the job right, and stay with the company long-term.

Here are some more insight on what the companies with chatted with told us about the current hiring market:

  • 55% of transport companies said driver quality and availability is their biggest recruitment challenge.

  • 73% planned to hire drivers at the start of this year, showing demand for reliable drivers remains high.

  • 36% of businesses said they can fill driver roles within two weeks, while another 36% said it takes a month or longer to find the right person.

  • Pay and working conditions remain a major factor in attracting and retaining drivers, with businesses offering competitive packages reporting fewer issues keeping good people.

  • The ageing driver workforce and lack of younger entrants continue to create long-term challenges for the industry.

This data shows that companies offering fair pay, reliable hours, and a decent working environment simply don't struggle as much with driver turnover.

Ultimately, transport businesses need a recruitment strategy focused on building a dependable workforce for the long haul. What they don’t want is to be scrambling to fill the next empty cab.

That’s where a solid recruitment partner can swoop in to save the day.

What makes a good driver recruitment agency relationship?

A recruitment agency is only as good as the relationship it builds.

For drivers

A good driver recruitment agency will never fail to:

  • Take the time to understand what you’re looking for: The best roles aren’t just about filling a shift. They’re about finding work that fits your experience, availability, and career goals.

  • Keep communication clear: Drivers want to know where they stand. Regular updates, honest conversations, and clear expectations make a big difference.

  • Offer opportunities that match your skills: A strong agency knows the difference between simply having a licence and having the experience needed for a specific role.

  • Support you throughout your journey: Whether you’re looking for your next role or building your career, having someone in your corner matters.

For transport businesses

As far as transport businesses are concerned, the best agencies will always:

  • Understand your operation: Every transport business works differently. The right agency takes the time to understand your requirements, from the type of work to the kind of drivers who fit your team.

  • Focus on quality, not just availability: Sending over a name isn’t the same as finding someone reliable who will represent your business properly.

  • Make compliance a priority: Driver recruitment comes with a lot of responsibility. A good agency understands the regulations and keeps standards high.

  • Build long-term partnerships: The best results come from working together over time, not just making a quick placement and moving on.

Ultimately, successful driver recruitment comes down to trust. Drivers want an agency that understands their needs, and businesses want a recruitment partner they can rely on.
