What Financial Changes Mean for HGV Drivers This Tax Year

Not sure what financial changes are happening for HGV drivers this tax year? Here’s a simple breakdown of pay, costs & other industry updates to keep in mind.

A new tax year usually brings a few changes with it. If you’re working as a HGV driver, some of those can have an impact on your pay and how things run day to day.

Some changes are easy to spot, like pay increases. Others happen more behind the scenes, but still shape the industry in the long run.

Either way, it’s helpful to know what’s going on – without getting too bogged down in the details. So, here’s a simple breakdown of what’s changing and what it means for you.

The Key Financial Changes to Be Aware Of

There are a few updates this year that could affect what you earn and what you spend. Some are good, others are just worth keeping on your radar – but all of them play a part in the bigger picture.

National Living Wage increase

One of the more noticeable changes this year is the increase in the National Living Wage.

This is good news for anyone starting out, but the impact doesn't stop there. When the baseline moves up, we usually see a knock-on effect where pay rates shift upward across the whole industry to stay competitive.

For drivers, this equals better job offers and a more solid paycheck, regardless of where you are on the pay scale.

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) changes

There have also been some Statutory Sick Pay changes. The biggest update? Those three unpaid waiting days are being scrapped.

From now on, you’ll be eligible for SSP from the very first day you’re off, if a few key thresholds are met. They’ve also removed the minimum earnings limit, so more people are covered than before.

The 5p fuel duty cut is sticking around (for now)

There’s a lot of uncertainty about fuel prices, but one thing we know for sure is that the government has extended the 5p-per-litre fuel duty cut until the end of August 2026.

After that, the cut will likely be phased out in small steps. It’s not a permanent fix, but it does mean you won’t see a massive jump in pump prices during your spring and summer runs.

It’s also worth remembering that a large chunk of fuel costs are made up of fuel duty (currently 52.95p per litre) plus 20% VAT, which is applied on top of the total.

So, as you’ve probably noticed, prices can still move around week to week depending on wider factors.

The HGV road user levy

If you’re an owner-operator or manage a small fleet, keep an eye on the HGV Road User Levy changes starting in April 2026. The rates are shifting to a tiered system that favours newer, greener vehicles.

  • Euro VI trucks: You’ll see the lowest rates (roughly £161 to £619 a year depending on weight).

  • Older trucks (Euro V and below): You’ll be looking at a higher daily or annual charge. The goal is to push the industry towards Euro VI standards, so if you’re thinking about upgrading your rig this year, the tax savings might make the decision a bit easier.

What about subsistence?

While there hasn't been a massive mandatory jump in the HMRC overnight allowance, it’s worth checking with your employer or accountant.

The standard industry rate is still around £34.90 (or 75% of that if you're in a sleeper cab). Since inflation has pushed up the price of a decent meal and a shower at services, some firms are being more flexible with actuals (receipt-based claims) rather than just the flat rate.

It’s always worth a quick chat to see how your firm handles those rising costs

Wider Industry Changes to Keep in Mind

Beyond the pay and the costs, there’s a lot changing under the hood this year.

Joint and Several Liability (JSL)

Some of the biggest changes this year won’t show up on your payslip, but they’re a big deal for your job security. From April 2026, new Joint & Several Liability (JSL) rules are coming in to hold companies accountable for how drivers are paid.

It means the companies at the top of the chain can now be held responsible if an umbrella company or agency dodges taxes.

For you, this is a win – it’s designed to flush out the dodgy setups and purported umbrellas that cut corners. It means more transparency and a much lower risk of you getting hit with an unexpected tax bill because a middleman didn't play by the rules.

Digital driving licences and smarter roadside checks

The move toward a paperless industry is picking up speed. The new GOV.UK Wallet is starting to phase in digital driving licences.

While you should still keep your physical card for now, these digital versions are designed to make onboarding at new jobs and roadside checks by the DVSA much faster.
